Everybody knows what error pages are. It can happen to any website, links break, servers go down, pages get lost and your visitors end up on the 404 page – a standard response code in HTTP telling the user, in effect, that they’ve clicked on a broken link.
This has always been an immense source of frustration, but in recent years, creatives have taken up the challenge of designing bespoke 404 pages that can at least sweeten the pill of finding you’re in the wrong place.
When done really well, they become mini-ambassadors for the website itself, being shared on Twitter and blogs as an example of the site or service’s keenness for customer service and unique approach to design.
Using cPanel & WHM 56, you can create custom Error Pages for lots of different HTTP status codes. Whether it’s a bad request, or a missing page, bandwidth limitations or gateway timeouts, cPanel users can navigate to the Advanced settings of their cPanel account and select Error Pages to begin customizing away.
Here are the steps to customize an error page in cPanel:
Don’t forget to enrich your “not found” pages to guide your users to new searches, in addition to the default display of a boring 404 message. Think of this as a way to make the best out of a bad situation. You can use this opportunity to promote a new product, share additional services, or just to let them know in a very creative or funny way that the site should be back up and running soon.
